DC Gin Rickey DIY

How to make the District's official cocktail at home.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz gin (preferably Green Hat DC gin)
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice (about 1 lime)
  • Club soda to top
  • Ice
  • Lime wheel for garnish

Instructions

  1. 1

Fill a highball glass with ice cubes.

  2. 2

Pour the gin over the ice.

  3. 3

Squeeze in the fresh lime juice. Drop the spent lime half into the glass.

  4. 4

    Top with cold club soda.

  5. 5

Give it one gentle stir — you want to mix without losing the fizz.

  6. 6

Garnish with a lime wheel. Sip on a porch and feel like it's 1883.

The Rickey is Washington DC’s official cocktail, declared by the DC Council in 2011. It was invented at Shoomaker’s Bar on Pennsylvania Avenue in 1883 by Colonel Joe Rickey, a Democratic lobbyist. The original was made with bourbon, but gin quickly became the preferred spirit. It’s dead simple — just spirit, lime, and soda — and that simplicity is what makes it perfect for DC’s brutal summers.
