Dangerously Delicious Pies on H Street: Add Some Danger to Your Thanksgiving Table

<<UPDATE: 11/16/09 @ 6:00 PM: I just got off the phone with the folks at Dangerously Delicious, and they told me they’re still a few weeks away from their official opening, but they are accepting Thanksgiving orders over the phone for pickup at the store.
They are offering five of their sweet pies for order: apple, apple crumb, pecan, pumpkin and sweet potato. Pies are $30 each and weigh in at 5 pounds. Give them at call at (202) 398-PIES and place your order today.>>
Every so often, we’re faced with something so coincidental that we just have to stop wonder if there isn’t something bigger at work. Sure, for some people these kinds of existential questions are triggered by major life events. For us, go figure, it’s food.
Back in June, we took a trip up to Hampden in Baltimore. While checking out HonFest, an old favorite event, we made our way to Dangerously Delicious Pies. It was our first experience with the rock n’ roll pie place, and we left with a major sugar high and a healthy respect for the shop’s repertoire. We even promised a return visit next time we’re in Baltimore.
And that’s where the big coincidence comes in.
No sooner had we posted our write-up in early July than Alex and our friends over at Brightest Young Things broke the news that Dangerously Delicious would soon be expanding into Washington. They’d be opening up at 1339 H Street, NE, near the Rock n’ Roll Hotel, before the end of the year. That’s right – not only were the pies following us from Baltimore, they would be taking up residence in our neighborhood!
Now we’re just a few short days away from Thanksgiving, and the pieman is just about ready to throw open his oven doors. Pick your favorite for the holiday after the jump.
The buzz has started to build, with the Going Out Gurus suggesting a Thanksgiving Week opening and Fox 5′s morning show paying a visit this morning. So what can you expect once Dangerously Delicious is open for business?
The menu at Dangerously Delicious is split up into three categories: Sweet, Savory and Quiches. Sweet pies include old standbys like pecan, sweet potato and apple, but they also include unique offerings like the full custom custard (aka White Trash Creme Brulee), the Mobtown Brown (pecan with chocolate and caramel) and the Baltimore Bomb that we raved about after trying it at HonFest.
If you’ve never tried a savory pie, Dangerously Delicious has your number. Meats, cheeses, onions, potato – you name it and they’ll bake it into a pie that eats like a meal. Check out a sausage, tomato and fennel; pork barbecue; or a steak chili to see why pie isn’t just for dessert anymore.
And if you still believe that real men don’t eat quiche…well that’s just sad. If a rocker like Rodney Henry can put them on the menu, then you can eat them without compromising your masculinity. Try a bacon, onion and gruyere; a crab and cheddar; or the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink cowboy quiche to see what you’ve been missing with all that macho posturing.
Dangerously Delicious DC will be located at 1339 H Street, NE, between the Rock N’ Roll Hotel and the H Street Country Club. No word on hours yet, but you can call them at (202) 398-PIES (7437) to learn more about their opening date and hours. You can also place an order for your very own Thanksgiving pie, which is sure to be a hit whether you’re playing host or houseguest this year.

I’m excited about the addition to the hood but a little worried based on bad reviews of the Baltimore location on Yelp and other places. I can’t wait to try the DC location though to form my own opinion.
Love these guys. Used to always swing thru Bmore to grab one each time we went to NYC.
You have to be joking. You really trust the whiners and losers who criticize people on yelp?
DDP is a great concept. Great product.
And really, if you hate something, wouldn’t the world be a better place if you just kept it to yourself?
What an easy copout to complain anonymously or virally.
I want me some PIESSSSS!!
Their answering machine says they’re also taking orders via e-mail at orders[at]dangerouspiesdc[dot]com.
Nice! Thanks for the heads up, Becca.
If you’re thinking about ordering a pie from Dangerously Delicious, I’d recommend doing it soon. Not sure if they’ve got a cut-off for orders, but most places don’t take orders right up to the day itself.
Pl. let me know when you’re opening. Sounds great!
Peace, tj
I just called the number listed above and I got a fax machine. I hope these guys aren’t a victim of the economy and H St will be denied their potential goodness. COME ON- what does B-more have that DC does not?
I wouldn’t be too worried, Muhammad. When we spoke to them before Thanksgiving, they were talking about December 12th as their planned opening date. I suspect their phone line doubles as a fax.
Keep an eye on that space – we should be enjoying their pies soon enough!
